Dr Smith is an expert in artificial intelligence, particularly evolutionary algorithms, knowledge representation and machine learning. Over his 30-year career, he has helped to create (among other things) software systems that describe immune system behaviour, learn innovative fighter jet manoeuvres, reveal emotion in financial markets, and suggest how social networks propagate political polarisation. Clients have included the US Navy, Army & Air Force, NASA, Oak Ridge National Laboratories, Boeing, the European Union, British Aerospace, Airbus and British Telecom.
Dr Smith is Director of AI and Data Science at Digital Catapult, the UK’s leading digital technology innovation centre, and he maintains a portfolio of “Tech for Good” projects as a executive, consultant, and advisor. He also served as an advisor with cultural strategists Barker Langham on the development of an A.I. exhibit for a new Science Museum.
Dr Smith was a co-founder of BOXARR Ltd., and co-inventor of its product, a powerful, scalable and flexible modelling tool, designed to make complex systems ‘human-readable’. Dr Smith helped grow BOXARR from an idea to a product that has been used globally by blue-chip clients to face some of the largest complexity challenges in the world.
